Lofts and loft styling is a recent development in DC. Unlike most American cities, the “downtown” here wasn't originally a mix of industrial and residential buildings. But the younger workers are attracted to the open floor plan that's typical of lofts in New York – and several builders have started adapting this style in the areas around DC.

Lofts have always been the proving ground for new design ideas. They were the first to use open spaces and a few pieces of furniture; great art statements – like huge museum-szed canvasses and idiosyncratic mixes of furnishings and finishes.
